Every gaming headset promises great sound, and on a spec sheet surround sound all looks the same. JBL wanted to reach a younger gaming audience and let them feel what the immersive surround sound of its Quantum headsets adds to a game. The question was how to show something you can only hear.
With the screen out of the picture, every footstep, creaking door and whisper suddenly mattered, and every scare came as a surprise. In spring 2021, Twitch streamers Marnick, Abulic, Silerzz and CasualGorilla and YouTubers Arturito and Gronie played Resident Evil Village blindfolded, often with a friend beside them calling out directions. On Twitch, each streamer unboxed the JBL box with the Quantum 800, a custom blindfold and a challenge card, took on the challenge live and gave the same box away to their viewers, with a link to the giveaway popping up in the chat throughout the stream. Later that year more streamers joined in with games of their own choice, from Call of Duty to Phasmophobia, and turned their best moments into TikToks. No peeking.
